NYC Fall Day Trips: Cold Spring

Just an hour and a half train ride from Grand Central, you'll arrive at Cold Spring, a beautiful town that combines natural beauty and small-town charm. Here, you can find stunning foliage colors. The Main St is lined up with cute shops, cafe and restaurants, and they all have a cozy feeling.

How to Get There:

Take the Poughkeepsie line to Cold Spring Station. The ride is about 1.5 hours, and round-trip off-peak tickets cost $30.5. It's about a 5-minute walk from the train station to the Main St.

Photo Spots:

  • Pig Hill Inn: Pig Hill Inn is a cozy bed and breakfast on one of Cold Spring's most iconic corners. In fall, the entire wall transforms into a foliage color palette that is so picturesque.

  • Fair St: A side street off of Main St where it is more residential. Here you can find more fall and Halloween decorations. It will put you right in the fall mood.

Shopping:

  • Cold Spring General Store: The Cold Spring General Store has lovely curated goods and that classic general store vibe. Here you can find local products and gifts.

  • Understory Market: An eco-friendly and zero-waste store focusing on household products and toiletries. Check it out to support a sustainable lifestyle!

  • Old Souls: A beautifully curated store dedicated to outdoor products. You can find various brands and items here, from outdoor clothing to small gifts.

  • Cold Spring Antique Center: If you love antique treasure hunting, you can easily spend a long time at the antique center here. There are many retro items, and there is also a lot of stuff related to the arts.

  • Split Rock Books: A peaceful bookstore with delightful blue walls. They have a great selection of books, and the staff is very friendly. There's also a chance that you'll meet the bookstore cat!

Food:

  • Angie's Bake Shop & Cafe: Bakery, $

This bakery has both sweet and savory options, whether you crave a sandwich or some freshly baked goods. We loved the classic chocolate chip cookies here.

  • Le Bouchon: French, $$

This is one of the most eye-catching restaurants you'll not miss on Main St. It serves authentic French cuisine with staples on the menu like escargots, beef tartare, and mussels.

  • Cro' Nest: Wine Bar, $$

It's a perfect spot for some wine and light snacks. The ambiance is very cozy inside. You can also sit outside and enjoy the historical vibe of Cold Spring.

  • Citrine Cafe: Cafe, $

A cafe inside a boutique store. Not only is the stuff here really cute, but we also loved our pesto sandwich!

Outdoor Things to Do:

  • Hudson Highlands State Park: Cold Spring has beautiful natural surroundings and great hikes. It has both moderate and difficult hikes. Many trails, especially Breakneck Ridge, have a great view of the Hudson River.

  • West Point Foundry Preserve: A beautiful nature park with a rich history. This area used to be an industrial area for the army, and now it is a scenic park with trails and waterfalls. It's perfect for nature and history lovers.
